Spirited KKR end losing streak with clinical victory
In what was yet another low-scoring fixture of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, Kolkata Knight Riders have defeated Punjab Kings by 5 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday (April 26).
With this victory, Kolkata ended their four-match losing streak and rose to the 5th spot of the points table, while Punjab are in the 6th position. Both teams have so far played six games, winning two and losing four. Kolkata’s other victory had come in their tournament opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Batting first, Punjab racked up a paltry total of 123 for 9 in their 20 overs, with Chris Jordan being the only batsman to bat at a run-rate better than 100. He scored 30 off 18 balls with one four and 3 sixes.
Mayank Agarwal, however, was the top-scorer, making 31 of 34 balls with one four and a couple of sixes. Captain KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran both scored 19 runs.
For Kolkata, Prasidh Krishna returned three for 30 in his four overs, while Sunil Narine and Pat Cummings got two wickets each.
In reply, Kolkata did not have the best of starts, as they were tottering at 17 four three at one point. But the 66-run stand between Rahul Tripathi and captain Eoin Morgan saved their day.
Morgan remained not out till the end with 40-ball 47, striking 4 fours and 2 sixes, as Kolkata chased down the target with 3.2 overs to spare. Tripathi made 41 off 32 balls with 7 boundaries.
Moises Henrique bowled just one over for Punjab, and he took one wicket for 5 runs. Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Hooda also got one wicket apiece.
Brief scores: Punjab Kings 123 for 9 in 20 overs (Agarwal 31, Jordan 30; Prasidh 3/30) lost to Kolkata Knight Riders 126 for 5 in 16.4 overs (Morgan 47*, Tripathi 41; Henriques 1/5) by 5 wickets.
