Sri Lanka Sports Minister orders to sack Hathurusingha
Sri Lanka Cricket is likely to undergo a complete overhauling of the national team’s backroom staff following their sides’ dismal performance in the just completed ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 that saw just three wins from nine games.
As per reports revealed, Sri Lanka’s sports minister Harin Fernando on Friday has ordered to remove the national head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.
According to SLC officials, Chandika Hathurusingha and his assistants would be fired after team’s upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh. The contracts of fielding coach Steve Rixon, batting coach Jon Lewis and fast bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake will also be terminated once the previously contracted time would be over.
SLC president Shammi Silva stated, “We’re looking at that same line, but we (the board) will see what we can do when we come back. We first need to talk with the minister.”
Last week Hathurusingha expressed his hopes to continue till the contract end.
“I have another 16 months. I hope to remain until my contract runs out,” Hathurusingha told reporters after returning from the World Cup tournament.
Bangladesh who are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on Saturday will be the first foreign sports team to visit the country since the April 21 suicide bombings killing 258 people.
The series starts on July 26 and ends on August 1 at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
