Steve Smith smash unbeaten 91, Aussies claim warm-up series win against Kiwis


Steve Smith plundered an unbeaten 91 on Friday against New Zealand XI as Australia won their final warm-up game before leaving for England.

The Aussies were adjudged winners by five wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method after scoring 248 for five off 44 overs in reply to New Zealand XI’s 286 for nine from 50 overs.

New Zealand XI’s innings was signified by the second successive hundred by Will Young.

The 26-year old uncapped Kiwi batsman who is not even in the country’s World Cup squad, completed his second ton in a row on Friday.

In the previous occasion, Young mastered a classy 130 against the Aussies on Wednesday.

Smith’s 91 was followed by his another fine knock of 89 not out in the second of the three-match series in Brisbane on Wednesday.

On contrary to that, David Warner failed to produce any productive score on his return to the side for second successive time after starting the series with a rapid fire 39.

“His timing and his class was back again,” Australia captain Aaron Finch said when asked about the return of Steve Smith.

“It was like he hadn’t left.”

Australia, have now won the series 2-1; the Aussies claimed a tricky win in the opening game at Allan Border Field by one wicket while their trans-Tasman rivals bounced back to take the second match by seven wickets.

Australia are scheduled to play two more warm-up matches at Southampton, against England and Sri Lanka.

The Australians start their attempt to defend the World Cup on June 1 against Afghanistan in Bristol.
