Tamim awaits fireworks from teammates
While Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal alone has scored 223 runs in the first two matches of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the rest of the Bangladesh squad have managed to score only 246 runs – a mere 23 runs more than the overall tally of Tamim.
These numbers clearly define Bangladesh’s journey so far in the tournament. Tamim has been in astounding form and firing up often, but the other players haven’t been able to lend him a good support. And the result is apparently evident in the outcomes of the matches – they lost the first match to England in a bad manner, and if there was no rain, they would also lose the second match to Australia.
But thanks to the Australia washout, Bangladesh are still very much in contention for a berth in the semifinals, and Tamim is waiting for his teammates to fire up as well against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Friday (June 9).
“Everyone doesn’t play well in every touranemt. But you never know, maybe they will come back to form in the next match. Those who couldn’t click yet, if one of them fares well in the next match, we will have our chances to win the match. Every single player of this Bangladesh side is tested performer. So we definitely have very good chances in our favour provided we play as a team.”
Bangladesh’s recent records against the Kiwis is another reason for Tamim to be optimistic. Since October 2013, these two teams have met each other in 13 ODIs, and Bangladesh have come out victorious on 13 occasions. And during this time, the Tigers have even whitewashed the Black Caps twice.
“We are going to face such a side whom we have beat both at home and away from home. So we are of course confident. No doubt they are a very strong side. So we have to play with our best effort if we are to put together a good competition against them,” said Tamim.
