Tom Blundell added as Watling cover for final Test
Wicket-keeper batsman Tom Blundell has been added to the squad for the final Test against Bangladesh as cover for injured BJ Watling.
Watling suffered a hamstring injury during the course of New Zealand’s big win over Bangladesh in the second Test in Wellington. He was replaced by the uncapped wicket-keeper, Peter Bocock, on the final day of the Test.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead on Wednesday informed that Watling didn’t take the gloves on the final day so as to give himself more time to recuperate before the third and final Test.
However, they have added Tom to the squad as cover and a final call regarding Watling’s participation in Christchurch will be taken on Friday.
Tom played two Tests for New Zealand. He made his debut against West Indies, during the 2017-18 season, after Watling had been ruled out with a hip injury.
Watling’s injury is not the only concern for the hosts as their skipper Kane Williamson’s participation in the final Test is also on hold. He suffered a grade one tear to his left pectoral muscle while fielding on the third morning of the second Test against Bangladesh.
Kane will wait until Friday to confirm the fitness. If he doesn’t recover he’s expected to be replaced by 26-year Will Young.
