Sophie Ecclestone’s devastating spell has led Trailblazers to a comfortable nine-wicket victory in their first match of Women’s T20 Challenge against Velocity at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Earlier Velocity defeated Supernovas in the opening game of the tournament on Friday night in which Jahanara Alam took 2 wickets for Velocity.

Velocity opted to bat in their second game. Seamer Jhulan Goswami made the first breakthrough for Trailblazers, bowling Shefali Verma for 13 runs in the third over. English left-arm spinner Ecclestone sent back captain Mithali Raj (1) and Veda Krishmamurthy (0) on consecutive balls in the fourth over.

The Trailblazers brought down a batting collapse setting Velocity to 27/7 in 8.2 overs. Shikha Pandey (10) and Leigh Kesperek (11*) brought the team’s score close to 50 but Trailblazers managed to bundle them our for 47 runs in 15.1 overs.

Ecclestone bagged 4 wickets for 9 runs 3.1 overs including a maiden. Goswami and Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked two each. Bangladeshi all-rounder Salma Khatun bowled 2 overs for 4 runs. Her Bangladeshi compatriot Jahanara made 1 run with the bat, becoming the fourth scalp of Ecclestone.

West Indian Deandra Dottin’s 28-ball unbeaten 29 runs including 3 fours guided Trailblazers to victory with 73 balls remaining. The only wicket in the innings to fall was skipper Smriti Mandhana (6), who was caught by Jahanara at mid-on off Kasperek.

The loss means Velocity will have to hope Trailblazers beat Supernovas in the last league game on Monday. The final will be held on November 9, a day before the final of IPL 2020.
