Warne’s Warriors clinched the Cricket All Stars series opener by 6 wickets to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Sachin’s Blasters in New York Mets’ baseball stadium in Citi Field, Flushing Meadows, on Saturday night.
Shane Warne led his side from the front to be adjudged the Man of the Match for his three wickets, including the dismissals of opposing team captain Sachin Tendulkar and the legendary Brian Lara. VVS laxman also fell victim to Warne’s spin. Andrew Symonds also took three wickets, bowling just two overs for his side.
On the other handhand it was Blasters opener Virender Sehwag, who hit the maiden first half-century of the series in just 22 balls. Besides the great Tendulkar knocked a respectable 26 from 27 balls to lead his team to a respectable total of 140 for 8 in their 20 overs.
Chasing a modest target of 141, Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara hit 81 runs between them to help the Warriors go past the finishlinefinishline with 16 balls remaining.
The Sri Lankan kegend Sangakkara clobbered two fours alongside as many as three sixes. He was eventually removed by Shoaib Akhtar for 41, while Ponting smacked an an magnificent 48 not out off 38 ball, faring three fours and sixes apiece. For the Blasters, Akhtar picked up two wickets while Muttaiah Muralitharan bagged one.
Overall it was a thoroughly entertaining affair altogether, and the presence of so many legends of the sport gave the event a wonderful atmosphere of nostalgia. The second match of the series is scheduled for November 11 in Houston.
