Virat Kohli delivers 22nd Test hundred
The Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be in the headlines for the coming days as he delivered a gem of an innings in the first Test against England. India are now in encounter with host England for the five match Test series.
On day one of the first Test, the hosts won the toss and elected to bowl first and they put up 285/9 at stumps. On the second day they managed to score only two runs and was bowled out for 287 runs.
In reply India had a strong opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay as they added fifty runs. All of a sudden the English left arm seamer did a magic as he picked three wickets in eight balls and cleared the Indian top order. At that stage India were struggling at 59/3. Then the captain and vice captain had a small partnership and Rahane went out when the team total was 100.
Like the main batsmen the all rounders and tail enders also did not made any serious contributions to the total. On the other end the Indian skipper Virat Kohli took the responsibility. With some support from the tail enders, he managed to score his 22nd Test hundred and became only the second Indian player to score a Test century in Edgbaston after Sachin Tendulkar.
He scored 149 runs playing 225 balls including 22 fours and one six. His sensible, single handed knock took the team total to 274 which was 13 runs short of the England’s total in the first innings. With this century Kohli took a lead in the most discoursed Kohli-Anderson clash.
On the bowling side, Sam Curran took 4 wickets and James Anderson, Adhil Rashid and Ben Stokes took two wickets each. After Kohli’s wicket the hosts started their second innings and they ended the day at 9/1 as Ashwin took the wicket of opener Cook pretty much in the same fashion of the first innings.
