Warner, Bancroft give Australia Ashes lead
80s from openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have sealed a hammering ten-wicket over England in the first Test at The Gabba, Brisbane which gives Australia 1-0 lead in The Ashes series.
The hosts were 114 without losing any wicket in 34 overs on day four in their run-chase of 170 runs. Warner and Bancroft got the rest of the runs in 16 overs in the fifth day.
The new opening duo put on unbeaten 173 runs in 50 overs. This is the highest-successful run-chase without losing any wicket, breaking Australia’s Archie Jackson and Bill Ponsford’s 172 against West Indies in Adelaide in 1930.
Warner smacked 87 runs off 119 deliveries with 10 boundaries while newcomer Bancroft made sensible 182-ball 82 including 10 fours and a six.
Earlier, the match was evenly poised when England posted 302 in the first innings and then Australia replied with 328, credited by Man of the Match Steve Smith’s captain’s knock of 141* runs. England were shoot out for 195 runs in their second innings with losing the last four wickets for ten runs.
The second Ashes Test will begin on December 2 at the Adelaide Oval. For the first time, a day-night Men’s Ashes Test match will be played. England Women took on Australia Women in a day-night Women’s Test clash in this summer.
