Watch: Fortuin affects a brilliant run-out to send Babar Azam packing
Pakistan captain Babar Azam led his team ever so well during the two-match Test series against South Africa at home. The hosts were superb in both games, winning the first Test by 7 wickets and the second Test by 95 runs. As a result, they completed a 2-0 clean sweep over Proteas.
This is Pakistan’s first Test series win over South Africa since 2003. After the end of the Test series, both teams are currently involved in the 3-match T20I series. The first T20I match took place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Babar Azam departs for a first-ball duck
During the T20I opener, captain Babar Azam departed for a golden duck after Proteas all-rounder Bjorn Fortuin affected a brilliant run-out to send him packing in the first ball he faced. Earlier, Fortuin was given the ball to bowl the first over.
Mohammad Rizwan took a single on the first ball to rotate the strike to Babar Azam. The Pakistan captain didn’t time the ball properly as he hit it towards the mid-wicket. Meanwhile, Fortuin sprinted towards the ball only to take it and aim directly at the stumps. It was a brilliant piece of run-out.

Babar had a bad day at the office and it is indeed very rare to see him get out for a duck. He is currently the No.2 batsman in the ICC T20I rankings with as many as 820 points. Surprisingly, this is the 13th time Babar as been run out in his T20 career international, domestic and franchise combined.
On the other hand, Rizwan had a great time with the bat as he powered his team to 169/6 with his 64-ball-104. His unbeaten knock included 6 fours and 7 sixes. In reply, South Africa showed great intent in the run-chase but they lost the game by just 3 runs.
Reeza Hendricks and Janneman Malan scored 54 and 44 respectively. Rizwan was recently named the man of the Test series against South Africa. He continued his good form with the bat even in the T20I opener. He was named the man of the match for his impeccable batting.
“This match was important for us. There was some pressure at the start. We read the pitch well. I try to adjust and improve on my shot-making,” he said at the post-match presentation.
Pakistan captain couldn’t have asked for a better performance from his boys as his team took an opening lead in the series. “The boys put in a great effort. We gave some runs in the PowerPlay but the spinners brought us back in the game. Usman was really good today.
There was some grip on the pitch and was assisting the spinners. In the end, the fast bowlers came back to pull it off. It was slow and wasn’t coming nicely to the bat initially. Rizwan showed application and was outstanding. We feel confident. We are improving on our fielding as well,” Babar Azam said at the post-match presentation.
