Watch: MS Dhoni departed on a no-ball!

MS Dhoni was looking in good touch to take India over the line, but a moment of brilliance from Martin Guptill stole the show.

Dhoni run-out
The first semi-final between India and New Zealand ended in a thrilling fashion after a stunning run-out from Martin Guptill ended MS Dhoni’s resistance and also the hopes of India.

However, a photo went viral which showed there were six men outside the circle. According to the rules, only five fielders are allowed outside the circle in power-play 3.

With India needing 24 runs off 9 balls after his dismissal, it ended up becoming too much for the lower-order batsmen to score. Therefore, as anticipated, Dhoni’s dismissal had put an end to all hopes of India winning the match.

It is visible on the graphic that New Zealand have their sweeper cover, third-man, fine leg, deep square leg, deep mid-wicket and long-on outside the circle. According to the graphic, the umpires should have called that a no-ball. However, it wouldn’t have changed Dhoni’s fate as a run-out is still legal on a no-ball.
