South Africa seal easy win despite Maxwell’s all-round effort
Glenn Maxwell’s all-round performance went in vain as South Africa won the only T20I by 21 runs in a rain-affected encounter.
Hosts Australia won the toss and opted to field first and the match was reduced to 10 overs per side after a heavy rain. Openers Quindon de Kock (22) and Reeza Hendricks (19) gave South Africa a firing start with 42 runs on the board in only 3 overs.
After the dismissal of both openers, skipper Faf du Plessis played his part with a brilliant cameo knock of 27 from just 15 balls. Coulter Nile and Andrew Tye picked up two wickets each for Australia and kept South Africa in control. However, in the end, they managed to post a huge score of 108 runs in their 10 overs.
In reply, Australia started the chase in the worst possible way and were in all sorts of trouble after losing 4 wickets for only 37 runs. But Glenn Maxwell came to the rescue and fought all alone till the end, though it was never enough as the men in yellow kept losing wickets at the other end.
Lungi Ngidi, Chris Morris and Phehlukwayo all picked up two wickets each and played a major role in restricting Australia to 87 runs in their 10 overs and win the match comfortably by 21 runs.
