Watch: Tim Paine mocks Ben Stokes
The first four days of the opening Ashes Test between England and Australia was indeed a fierce competition as the focus was more into scoring runs, taking wickets at crucial intervals.
However, as the passage of play stretched to the final day of the match, which is something quite rare in Test history, there were plenty of expectations as to who would outdo each other.
With first four days were so quiet, Tim Paine made sure everyone was entertained at least on the final day as he stole the spotlight for mocking England’s all-rounder Ben Stokes’ Kiwi heritage.
Everyone knows about Australia being a sledging team as they never run short of words. Behind the stumps, Tim Paine took a dig at Stokes’ Kiwi heritage. In a hilarious scene, the Aussie skipper was heard saying “Sir Ben Stokes. Sir Richard Hadlee” on the stump mic, citing Stokes’ New Zealand heritage.
For the unversed, Ben Stokes was recently nominated for the “New Zealander of the year” award. The comment was also a direct reference to reports which suggested that Stokes was going to be knighted, announcing the arrival as “Sir Ben Stokes”.
In an interesting turn of events, Tim Paine brought Nathan Lyon into the attack. The latter was proving to be more productive on a pitch that is starting to deteriorate Day 5.
Stokes defended the first 3 balls and then got out to Lyon’s ball. Tim Paine’s brilliance was witnessed after a very long time as he was involved in Stokes’ dismissal.
