Shakib’s information has carried baffling reaction among authorities and cricket fans. BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon said they cannot even ‘imagine’ Bangladesh squad without Shakib Al Hasan in a high profile tournament like Asia Cup.
BCB head told reporters after a meeting with head coach Steve Rhodes and other board members that the current condition is rather confusing.
“Shakib isn’t finding enough strength while batting because of the finger injury. He has so far been taking field actions with painkiller injections. But going through any surgical procedure needs at least six weeks for recovery which would be really hard to find out in this schedule,” Nazmul Hasan said.
“First of all, we are trying to manage the needed break in between the schedule; if that is not possible to find out, a single option is left but we really can’t imagine Bangladesh playing without Shakib Al Hasan in the Asia Cup,” BCB president mourned.
“The operation could be either before or after the Asia Cup. That might be during the series against Zimbabwe as well. We have talked with the head coach today – he mentioned about the Asia Cup. I told him about the preference of Asia Cup,” BCB boss said.
“We might try some new faces during the Zimbabwe series to replace Shakib. To me that is rather a better option. This year, the Asia Cup would be quite hard to compete. Absence of a performer like Shakib would demean the confidence level of the team. We are going to sit with him within a few days to discuss everything. But after all, I think it would be better to do the operation after the Asia Cup,” he concluded.
