‘We have to finish the tournament from the bottom of the table’

Beximco Dhaka have not been able to get out of the circle of failure till now. After losing to Minister Group Rajshahi and Gazi Group Chattogram, they again lost to Gemcon Khulna on Monday (November 30) which is their third straight loss in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup tournament.

Only one team will be eliminated from the group stage in this five-team tournament. Needless to say, those who will be at the bottom of the points table will be out first. Mushfiqur, who expressed much disappointment with Dhaka’s performance, is hopeful that young cricketers of his team will learn from mistakes obviously.

“It’s a young side. They will learn. I hope they will learn pretty quickly. Otherwise, we have to finish the tournament from the bottom of the table,” the wicket-keeper batsman said.

Despite Dhaka’s good bowling, Khulna scored 146 runs. However, the 34-year old Mushfiqur thinks that the target of 147 runs was chaseable. But the wickets at the beginning of the innings, put extra pressure into them, he admitted.

“First of all I thought, bowlers did a good job in that track. I thought 146 (148) was chaseable in the track. We knew it’s not going to be easy with the new ball. If we added at least 30 for no loss in six overs, we could’ve easily chased it down.

“It doesn’t matter how many changes you make as long as you are doing the basics right. But still I thought 147 is chaseable. We lost too many wickets in the first 3-4 overs. After that couldn’t take any risk,” Mushfiqur said.

“We batsmen need to show some responsibility upfront. You need to think it’s T20 format and 147 is 7.5 runs per overs. You need to learn pretty quickly. Otherwise, you have to pay for it,” he added.

Mushfiqur also showed frustration about dropping catches and casual fielding. “Obviously, I’m really proud of my bowling group. We dropped too many catches and also (missed) easy run outs.

“We started really well with the ball. We are a pretty young side in the fielding department. So you can’t give us any excuses for dropping those easy catches. That cost us 20-24 runs,” he concluded.
