Windies inch closer to World Cup

With four matches remaining in the Super Six phase, five teams are competing for two coveted spots in the marquee World Cup clash in the summer of 2019 in England. As of how things stand, UAE is the only team out of contention from the six teams still standing.

After a four-wicket win for West Indies against Zimbabwe, they are now inch closer from grabbing a spot in the World Cup. But on the other hand, Zimbabwe are still in with a chance despite the defeat.

In the all important game, Zimbabwe elected to bat first after winning the toss. Though opener Cephas departed for a duck, Solomon Mire played a decent knock of 45 runs and felt just short of scoring a fifty. But the man for Zimbabwe was Brendan Taylor who picked up another hundred. Courtesy of his 138 runs, Zimbabwe posted a huge score of 289 runs.

In reply, West Indies started off positively for the run chase. Though Chris Gayle failed to score bit, the next three batsman completely took Zimbabwe out of the game with Lewis scoring 64, Hope scoring 86 and Samuels scoring 86 runs. In the end, it made all to easy for West Indies to secure a six-wicket win.

Afghanistan will take on UAE tomorrow in a must-win game for Rashid Khan’s troops while UAE will only play for pride as they are already out of contention.

Brief score:
ZIM 289 (50 ov) | Taylor 138 | Holder 4/35, Roach 3/55
WI 290/6 (50 ov) | Hope 76, Samuels 86 | Blessing 2/36

Result: West Indies won by 6 wickets
