Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah has gone through a lot of hardships in the last one year due to injuries, fitness allegations, and cases of harassment of women. But he has finally returned to the Pakistan national team. Yasir has been named in the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka.
The 36-year-old leg-spinner last played a year ago on West Indies soil. The team will visit Sri Lanka in a few days. Before that, Yasir has been called up to the team. After being released from the case, the main obstacle was Yasir's fitness. Since then, the selectors have called him to the team as he has proved himself 'fit'.
"We have selected this squad considering the conditions in Sri Lanka and have equipped the team with the best possible resources," said chief selector Muhammad Wasim. "Our spin department is boosted with the return of Yasir Shah, who proved himself as a match-winner in Sri Lanka on our last tour and Sajid Khan has made the way for him. The spin department also includes two spin all-rounders in Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Ali Agha and left-arm orthodox Nauman Ali.”
The past record also played a role in the inclusion of Yasir in the Lanka tour squad. Pakistan toured Sri Lanka in 2015 and won the series 2-1. Yasir had a big role in that. He took 24 wickets in 3 matches.
Sajid Khan has been excluded from the team because of the inclusion of Yasir. Sajid, the highest wicket-taker of the Test series in Bangladesh, was not included in the Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.
However, left-arm spin all-rounder, Mohammad Nawaz has returned to the team after recovering from injury. Another spin all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who is awaiting his debut, has been named in the Test squad for the second time. The Test series will start on July 16. The second match of the series will start on July 24.
