Zaheer to join MI, Malinga will return as a player
Former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who had previously played three seasons for Mumbai Indians, is set to return to its dugout again, but this time as a coach.
It has been learnt that the former left-arm pacer, now 40 years old, will join the Mumbai Indians coaching crew headed by former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.
Though there has not been any confirmation as of late, and also no concerned MI officials could be reached for communication, Mumbai Mirror reports that Zaheer is surely going to be part of the MI coaching staff from next year onwards.
Zaheer will be the one to mentor the MI bowlers, which means there is no more pace for Lasith Malinga, who was the bowling mentor of the Mumbai Indians team last year.
Meanwhile Malinga has decided to throw his name in this year’s IPL auction pool. If he is eventually bought by a franchise, it will be the first instance of an IPL player returning to play after spending a year as a coach.
There is bright chance for Malinga to be picked, given that there is a possibility of the league going to South Africa next year. Foreign pacer will be extremely useful in overseas conditions, and teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings are already in the hunt for a foreign pacer.
