There was so much speculations ahead of the final of the BRB BPL-3 on Tuesday between Comilla Victorians and Rangpur Riders as to who would become the Player of the Tournament. There were three preliminary canditates in shape of Comilla’s Abu Haider Rony, Ashar Zaidi and Barisal’s Kevon Cooper. Finally the crown went to Ashar Zaidi, Comilla’s Pakistan-born English recruit.
Zaidi didn’t play in Comilla’s campaign opener but since the second one, he has featured in all ten matches Comilla played prior to the final. And in those 10 appearances, he hadhad scalped as many as 16 wickets at an average of 9.43 and economy of 4.57. He had also scored 199 runs at 66.33, coming to bat at late middle order and remained unbeaten on four occasions out of seven.
However Zaidi’s performance in the final wasn’t that good, compared to the performances he had showcased in the previous matches. He scored only 16 off 14 balls as the Comilla middle order wobbled. Earlier he also took one wicket in expense of 26 runs in his probing 4 overs. Overall it was a mediocre show from the Sussex all-rounder in the tournament finale. But as far as his performance in the entire tournament is concerned, he undoubtedly was the stand-out cricketer with both bat and ball, having scored 215 runs and taking 17 wickets, to well deservingly win the Player of the Tournament award.
