Aakash Chopra picks India’s opening pair for 1st Test against Australia

Team India have often struggled to put up a solid opening partnership in the overseas conditions. Incidents of openers getting dismissed within a couple of overs are many in record books. With good strength in the middle-order comprising the likes of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, India is getting away from danger.

For a team that has to win matches in overseas, it is vital to add value to the scorecard through openers. Once the opening pair provides a good start to the game then they are on driver’s seat. The upcoming Test series between Australia and India is just four days away from the start.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has passed the fitness test and has been declared fit by the physios at the NCA in Bengaluru. He will fly to Australia on December 13 and is likely to participate in the last two Tests. The first Test is scheduled to be held at the Adelaide Oval on December 17.

Aakash Chopra picks India’s opening pair:

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has now picked India’s opening pair for the first Test against Australia. According to the former Indian opener, KL Rahul may have to sit out of the playing XI for the Test opener because the right-handed batsman didn’t play day-night practise game at the SCG.

The cricket expert feels Prithvi Shaw is likely to open alongside Mayank Agarwal. Talking about the second warm-up game, Shaw put on a great show with the bat as he scored 29-ball-40 with the help of 8 fours. Even Shubman Gill looked pretty decent with his 43-run knock.

Chopra feels either Shaw or Gill should open alongside Mayank Agarwal. “KL Rahul was not played which means that he is probably not in the Indian team’s thinking at the moment,” former cricketer was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill both got a chance to play. This means that it is now a two-horse race between them on who will open with Mayank Agarwal. Both scored almost the same number of runs but then there is another innings coming,” he stated.

“It looks like Prithvi Shaw will be Mayank Agarwal’s opening partner in the first Test match because he is sent ahead while Shubman Gill is at No.3,” Chopra added.

“Since Mayank Agarwal got out early, Shubman Gill came almost at the start. So, it seemed like he is playing as an opener itself. So, it became an almost even playing field for both the batsmen,” Chopra concluded.
