Ashwin reveals the guy who taught him the carrom ball
India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best spinners in the world. He has been overlooked by the Indian selectors in white-ball cricket as the wrist-spin duo Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav cemented their positions in ODIs and T20Is. However, Ravi Ashwin has been making a bold statement as far as the red-ball cricket is concerned.
Ravi Ashwin will be seen in cricketing action against New Zealand in the Test series on February 21. He has bagged 362 wickets in 70 Tests at a scintillating average of 25.36. He has perfected the art of bowling carrom ball, a useful weapon that has helped him deceive the opposition.
In a recent interview with Cricbuzz.com, Ashwin revealed the name of the master who taught him how to bowl the carrom ball. Ashwin added that he learned the art of carrom ball from a guy who he met while playing tennis ball cricket in Tamil Nadu. However, even today, Ashwin couldn’t find the guy.
“The first time I went to play a tennis ball game, I was batting. There was this guy who was bowling with proper action, getting beautiful drift and getting the ball to go nicely out and in. Till today I can’t find where the guy is but I haven’t seen a better bowler who can bowl both in and out than him in my life. His name is SK. He was the one from whom I learnt that ball,” Ashwin was quoted as saying.
Ashwin further revealed that the bowler made him look like an idiot, as he was known to be a fantastic batsman as far as the tennis cricket is concerned.
“I was a big thing around the tennis ball circuit as a batsman then, so I said I need to learn from this guy. So, I used to go every morning, and he used to come and teach me for about 10-15 days,” he added.
