Ballance, Roland-Jones in for Lord’s Test
Batsman Gary Ballance and fast bowler Toby Roland-Jones have been picked in England’s Test squad for the first Test against South Africa at Lord’s Cricket Ground starting from July 6.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the 12-man squad for the first Test of the summer. Ballance did not play any of the matches in five-Test tour in India last year. He has scored 815 runs in eight County Championship for Yorkshire at an average of 101.87 with three centuries this season.
Toby Roland-Jones could make his Test debut on his home ground Lord’s as he has been brought in due to injuries of Chris Woakes and Jake Ball. He played his first ODI against South Africa at the same venue in May.
Stuart Broad was in doubt for the first Test due to heel operation. But he declared himself fit soon. He will be bowling with his new-ball partner Jimmy Anderson, who recovered from a groan strain.
Liam Dawson keeps his place in the Test squad. He made his debut in white shirts for England in the Chennai Test against India. He took two wickets in his side’s innings defeat.
Mark Wood hasn’t played any Test since 2015. He is set to return in Tests after one and a half year break.
England squad: Joe Root (captain), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Liam Dawson, Toby Roland-Jones, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, Jimmy Anderson.
