Bangladesh’s star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has sparked controversy recently by signing a deal with a news portal of a betting website. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is in discussion with Shakib in this regard. The board has announced to follow the zero tolerance policy on this controversial deal.
BCB did not take kindly to Shakib's pairing with Betwinner News, an online media outlet. Shakib has already been approached to end the controversy. The decision of both sides will be known soon.
Cricket Operations Committee Chairman Jalal Yunus said, “There has been an issue and we are in touch with him about it. We contacted him once. This issue needs to be resolved. We are talking to him to resolve this issue. You will know in one or two days.”
Gambling or betting is illegal in cricket. The board is therefore reluctant to make any concessions, “We show zero tolerance for such betting matters. He has been informed that we do not accept it (improper). He is our player, he will understand. And no one wants to get involved anywhere controversial. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, we have told him... hope to resolve it soon.”
There is a possibility of a financial loss if Shakib pulls out after signing the deal. In response to the question of whether the board will give any compensation to Shakib, Jalal Yunus said, “We did not think like that. Shakib also did not approach us about the matter. Let's solve the problem first, then let's see.”
