Bowlers, Liton-Soumya thump Dhaka
Gazi Group Chattogram have sealed a comfortable victory in their first match of Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020, beating Beximco Dhaka by 9 wickets at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur.
After winning the toss, Chattogram restricted Dhaka to the first sub-100 total of the tournament – 88/10 in 16.2 overs.
Shoriful Islam started the fall of wickets, dismissing Tanzid Hasan Tamim for 2 in the second over, which he bowled a maiden. Sabbir Rahman was promoted up to No.3 but he turned Shoriful’s second scalp scoring a 10-ball duck.
Dhaka’s trouble escalated when Mushfiqur Rahim departed for a golden duck in the fifth over. The Dhaka captain was caught at the first slip as he attempted his favourite reverse-sweep off Nahidul Islam.
Opener Naim Sheikh put on a fine show with the bat, hitting 3 sixes and 3 fours in his 23-ball 40 runs. Mosaddek Hossain bowled part-time off-spinners to send back Akbar Ali and Naim in the same over (ninth).
Dhaka were 65/3 at one stage. Mustafizur Rahman and Taijul Islam wrapped up the innings as Chattogram took the last seven wickets for 23 runs.
Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar gave Chattogram a commanding start in the run chase, adding 51 runs in the powerplay. The duo showcased their elegance as their side were cruising to win.
The 79-run stand was broken when Liton Das, who scored 34 off 33, was bowled by Nasum Ahmed in the tenth over. In the end, Mominul Haque hit the winning runs as Chattogram took a boost on their run rate, having 9.1 overs remaining.
Soumya top-scored with 29-ball 44* runs, hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes.
