McCullum, 40, will be on hand to fill his role for next month's LV= Insurance three-game Test series against New Zealand, which begins at Lord's from June 2, subject to obtaining the required work visa.
The ECB's selection panel, consisting of Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison, Managing Director of England Men's Cricket Rob Key, Strategic Adviser Andrew Strauss and Performance Director Mo Bobat, agreed that he was an excellent candidate for the role given the fact that during the had impressed by the selection process.
New Zealand-born McCullum currently works as the head coach of Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and previously coached Trinbago Knight Riders to the 2020 Caribbean Premier League title. He also had an exemplary playing career, scoring 101 friendlies and was of Test captain of the Black Caps from 2012 until his international retirement in 2016.
"We are delighted to confirm Brendon as head coach of the England Men's Tests. It was a real privilege to meet him and understand his views and vision for the game. I believe his appointment will be good for England's Test team," chief executive of England men's cricket Rob Key said. Key has been in negotiations with McCullum, who is currently in the midst of his IPL coaching stint at KKR.
McCullum is said to have impressed the ECB's selection panel, consisting of Key, Tom Harrison [CEO], Andrew Strauss  and Mo Bobat [Performance Director], which led to a unanimous decision to appoint him.
"He has changed cricket culture and environments for the better in recent years and I believe he is the person to do that for England's red ball cricket.
“We were incredibly fortunate to have a really strong list of high caliber candidates for the position, with Brendon proving to be our first choice.
“I would like to thank Tom Harrison and the ECB Executive Board for their support in this process.
"I believe in Brendon and Ben Stokes - an amazing coaching and captaining partnership. Time for us all to buckle up
and get ready for the ride.”
