Chief Selector explains Soumya’s sudden inclusion
Even not being included in the original squad to play the one day international series against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh have made a call to opener Soumya Sarkar to feature in the final match of the series.
Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu, on explaining the sudden inclusion, revealed they want to try out Soumya batting at number three or seven instead of his usual position in the opening.
“There are still some places that are up for grabs in the ODI set-up and we are just trying to see how fits in there.
We are not considering him to open the innings instead we will be keen to see how he reacts at No. 3 or 7,” he said.
The left handed batsman showcased a brilliant hundred in the only practice match against Zimbabwe.
Minhajul Abedin said further, “we need to see what we really need at No. 7. We are yet to decide about it considering whether we need a batting all-rounder or bowling all-rounder. You cannot forget that Soumya has certainly developed as a bowler while he has scored quite consistently in the recent past to make us notice him.”
Bangladesh have replaced Fazle Mahmud to the position of Shakib Al Hasan who was ruled out of the series on account of going through the rehabilitation process for his left hand injury. However, the selectors said they will try to find a suitable performer at number seven, whether he would be a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder, as per the requirement of the team.
