CPL 2020: St Lucia Zouks rope in Chris Gayle from Jamaica Tallawahs
West Indies star batsman Chris Gayle will play for the St Lucia Zouks in the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPl). Former franchise Jamaica Tallawahs did not want to keep him in the squad for the new season.
And St. Lucia has used this opportunity. The Darren Sammy-led side have bought Jamaica’s Chris Gayle for the eighth edition of the tournament following their decision to leave. KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited bought ownership of St Lucia Zouks a couple of months ago. They also own the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab. Gayle is currently playing for Punjab in the IPL.
Gayle played for Jamaica in the first four editions of the CPL. Later he moved to St Kitts & Nevis Patriots for two seasons. He rejoined Jamaica last season. Although he scored 116 runs in the second match, Gayle was able to score only 243 runs in total.
Jamaica were eliminated in the first leg, but at the bottom of the points table. St Lucia is another team that was eliminated in the first round last season. However, they have chosen Darren Sammy as the captain for the upcoming season as well.
Welcoming the biggest star of T20 cricket to his team, Sammy said,
“This is great news for the St Lucia Zouks. Also being a captain you get Universe boss in your team means something special. Chris Gayle is one of the most experienced batsmen in T20 cricket. The young players of the team can learn a lot from him.”
Sammy added, “I welcome him to the Zouks franchise. Gayle is now in St Lucia. Fans will be happy that Jamaica has let him go. My team now has a confident Gayle, who wants to prove himself as the best T20 batsman in the world. There is no waiting for the CPL. Hopefully the coronavirus will be in control soon and we will have a great tournament.”
KPH Dream Cricket Pvt Ltd has appointed Andy Flower as the team’s head coach after buying ownership of St Lucia. Flower is set to work with Gayle, one of the best T20 stars, and Darren Sammy, the team’s captain.
“It’s really great to have Chris Gayle for the 2020 CPL,” he said. “My contact with him is long. He made his Test debut in 2000 in Trinidad. I have seen him bat explosively in all three formats. I’m really looking forward to working with Gayle and Sammy.”
According to the pre-arranged schedule, this year’s CPL is scheduled to be held from August 19 to September 26. However, due to the current coronavirus situation, the organizers have started thinking of alternatives. Due to this, the tournament will be held in a stadium without spectators or it will be postponed till December.
