CWC 2019: Shakib to create handful of records
For Shakib Al Hasan, it was all about creating history with an ambitious mindset by not delving into the past. But things didn’t really go well with him in the past couple of months. There were injury concerns and as a result, he played much less cricket than any other Bangladesh player out there.
It is quite obvious that one would certainly lose their spot should he fail to make the cut into the squad. Shakib’s absence was costly for Bangladesh in the past and they missed his services. Also, there was stiff competition in the all-rounder rankings with Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan leading all the way as he started to rise above expectations for a handful of months.
The productive all-rounder is now on the verge of scripting yet another history by breaking several records when his side locks horns with South Africa in their World Cup opener on Sunday at The Oval.
“Getting a record in the World Cup would be a big achievement for me,” Shakib echoed. “I am looking forward to it but I am still one wicket away. Hopefully, I can get that in the first match. When your name is mentioned alongside some of the greats, obviously you feel proud. It will motivate me to do better,” the experienced campaigner added.
The world’s elite all-rounder will be looking forward to accomplishing a feat which would enable him to join an elite club of achieving 5000 runs and 250 wickets.
Only four cricketers have achieved the feat:
It should be noted that, by far, only four cricketers namely- Abdul Razzaq (234 matches), Jacques Kallis (296 matches), Shahid Afridi (273 matches) and Sanath Jayasuriya (304 matches) have achieved this ‘double’ feat. Going by Shakib’s statistics, he has essayed 5667 runs and 249 wickets in just 197 matches, which means Shakib has a marvellous chance to clinch the feat a bit faster than the other four of them.
Just one more wicket against South Africa will do for him. He had the chance to clinch the feat a tad earlier in tri-series final in Ireland but back spasm on the eve of the intriguing final ruled him out of the match. But that wouldn’t bother him too much as he has got the chance to do it in a sensational fashion and that too in a mega event like World Cup.
Not just that! It is the third straight showpiece event for Shakib which is quite a rare feat and he needs just five more runs to finish 11000 runs in International cricket for his national team having scored 10995 runs so far.
So, only Tamim Iqbal has scored more than 11000 International runs for his team so far with 12519 runs to his standards.
