Domingo missing Shakib, Saifuddin as well
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim’s withdrawal owing to security concerns has been one of the biggest talking points in the ongoing T20I series against Pakistan.
However, Bangladesh coach Rusell Domingo said he is missing two more key players in his side. One is Shakib Al Hasan, who is serving a ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), while the other is Mohammad Saifuddin, out with a back injury.
Domingo said this to reporters following Bangladesh’s 9-wicket defeat in the second T20I on Saturday (January 25) which handed the hosts an unassailable 2-0 in the series. They had won the series opener by 5 wickets.
“I think we are missing three players. Besides Shakib and Mushfiqur, there’s also Saifuddin, who could be useful with the ball while also contribute down the order as a batsman. Still I think it is also a big opportunity for other youngsters to express themselves. They (Shakib, Mushfiqur) will not be playing forever,” said Domingo.
“In T20 cricket, position is not important. The main thing is to adapt to the match situation. Yes, there are few more players excluded from the squad; they are also very good cricketers, but could not shine in the right time.”
Domingo was very optimistic about one particular youngster in the form of Naim Sheikh. Though Naim was in the squads against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, he did not get to play. He made his presence felt during the India series.
Naim may have still been unable to meet expectations, and was out with a duck in the second T20I, Domingo thought he has a bright future in the international circuit.
“Just think about Naim. He player moderate cricket in the first T20I. Just weeks ago he had also played an incredible innings against India. I see a very good cricketer of future in him.”
