Left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has become the fastest Bangladeshi bowler to take 50 wickets in ODI cricket during the Final of the tri-series against Sri Lanka in Mirpur.
Mustafizur required just one wicket before the Final game to complete his half-century of wickets in the 50-over format. He was economical with the ball at the start when Bangladesh were asked to bowl first in the match.
The Fizz struck on the third ball of the 36th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. He bowled a short ball to Upul Tharanga, who was on 56.Tharanga mistimed a pull shot and the ball hit the stumps to complete Mustafizur’s 50 wickets. He later took the wicket of Asela Gunaratne at the death.
It has taken only 27 ODIs (26 innings) for Mustafizur to take 50 wickets. He is the fastest Bangladeshi to achieve the milestone defeating Abdur Razzak (32 matches) and Syed Rasel (39). The Satkhira-born lad is the 11th Bangladeshi to 50 wickets.
Mustafizur is the joint-thirteenth fastest to 50 wickets. Waqar Younis, Shane Bond, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Clint McKay and Pat Cummins also took 27 ODIs to complete their 50s.
Ajantha Mendis has the world record to his name (19 matches). Among the current players, New Zealand’s Mitchell McClenaghan (23), Pakistan’s Hasan Ali (24), and Afghanistan’s Hamid Hassan and Rashid Khan took 26 ODIs each to scalp 50 wickets.
