Gill likely for second Test as Shaw faces injury scare
India face yet another injury scare ahead of their second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch beginning Saturday, as young opener Prithvi Shaw missed Thursday’s training session due to a swelling on his left foot.
This comes as a big blow for both Shaw and Team India, as the youngster seemed to have received skipper Virat Kohli’s unconditional backing to open the innings alongside Mayank Agarwal for the second Test, despite his failure in the first one in Wellington.
But now, due to a swollen foot and the development has put his participation in the Christchurch Test under jeopardy.
According to sources, Shaw will undergo a blood test on Thursday to ascertain the reason of the swelling. In case the medical report is favourable, a call will be taken during Friday’s practice session on his availability for the second Test.
It is understood that if the 20-year-old cricketer is not comfortable while batting, he will not make it to the playing XI.
In Shaw’s absence, Shubman Gill is expected to make his Test debut and he was also seen getting a good, long net session on Thursday. Team India head coach Ravi Shastri paid extra attention to Gill’s session ahead of what could be a possible Test debut for the Punjab batsman.
The venue of the second Test, Hagley Oval, even saw Gill score a double ton during the unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A earlier this month.
“I am currently, as I have been for a year or two, flying the flag for Shubman Gill. I think he is a special talent who India is leaving out unnecessarily. I think he could be the mainstay along with Kohli for the next 10 years for this batting line-up for India. I am not sure if he feels the same way, I would get him into the side,” former New Zealand star cricketer Scott Styris had said a couple of days ago.
