Harbhajan could have easily taken 700 wickets: Saqlain Mushtaq
Harbhajan Singh is one of the best spinners in the history of Indian cricket. In the recent past, Harbhajan has handled India’s spin attack between Ravichandran Ashwin and Anil Kumble era at the beginning of this century.
However, he has not had the opportunity to play in white jersey since 2012. Harbhajan has played only five Tests since being dropped from the team in 2011. Before that he played 98 Tests till 2011. He is the second highest wicket-taker among Indian spinners with a total of 413 wickets.
If Harbhajan had not been left out of the team again and again towards the end of his career, Pakistan legend Saqlain Mushtaq though he would have easily taken 700 wickets. But then due to the appearance of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan hadn’t got such an opportunity.
According to Mushtaq , since Harbhajan and Ashwin are two different types of bowlers, India should have played both together. Then, just as Harbhajan’s career would have been richer, so India would have benefited.
The former Pakistani off-spinner said,
“I was really surprised to see a bowler like Bhajji (Harbhajan) dropped. Ashwin and Bhajji’s style was different. They could have been in the XI together. If there are two right-arm pacers in the team, why can’t there be two off-spinners? There were specialties in Bhajji. He could have easily taken 700 wickets.”
Harbhajan’s career is over, so there is no point in discussing him now – Mushtaq also knows. So now he is betting on the current two Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin. According to him, both of them will be able to play more than 100 Tests.
Mushtaq said, “India’s current spin attack is also remarkable. Kuldeep Yadav is quite impressive. Ashwin, Jadeja are also consistently doing well. They are world class bowlers. I am sure they will both be able to play 100 Tests each.”
