I was completely shocked when Umesh Yadav went for INR 1 crore: Gambhir
Umesh Yadav was last seen playing for Team India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. The right-arm fast bowler sustained a calf muscle injury during the second Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground. After his injury, he had returned to India for rehabilitation.
As far as his performance in the last season’s IPL is concerned, he played only 2 games where he leaked too many runs from his quota of 7 overs. He conceded as many as 83 runs at an expensive economy rate of 11.85 and after which he was subsequently dropped from the RCB set-up.
RCB released him ahead of the IPL 2021 auction in Chennai. The Indian pacer set his base price at INR 1 crore. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals recruited his services at the same price in the auction. Apart from signing him, Delhi Capitals made smart purchases by roping in Tom Curran, Sam Billings, and Steve Smith.
Gambhir has say on Umesh Yadav:
Former Indian opener feels that Umesh Yadav should have bagged much more than he finally did in the IPL 2021 auction. The speedster has tremendous experience in playing in the IPL where he took 119 wickets in 121 games at an economy rate of 8.51.
The former Indian cricketer also added that it is indeed tough to find a pacer at 140 kmph mark on a consistent basis.
“Umesh Yadav, I was absolutely shocked when he went for Rs 1 crore, there are not many fast bowlers who can bowl 135-140. Yes, he can be a little hot and cold, but when he is hot he can be very hot, but then not many teams went for him,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
“It was a great buy for Delhi because Delhi wanted someone like Umesh Yadav with that kind of an experience because Ishant Sharma is not fit, they had to bowl someone like Tushar Deshpande, where there was not enough experience. Now they have got Umesh Yadav, so hopefully, he can do well for them,” he added.
