Ind vs WI: Kohli inches away from creating T20I world record
India skipper Virat Kohli proved once again that he is an absolute run-machine across the three formats. He steered his side to a stellar six-wicket win with eight balls to spare at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
The right-handed batsman batted with gumption as he scored an unbeaten 94 runs as India tracked the target of 208. In the process, Virat Kohli took his total runs tally in T20Is to 2,544 runs. He is now just 3 runs away from Rohit Sharma’s achievement, who holds the top spot with 2,547 runs to his name.
If Kohli manages to score three more runs in the second T20I against West Indies on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, he will reclaim the top spot and become the leading run-scorer in the truncated version of the game.
As Rohit is expected to play the next match, it is going to be a close contest between the two. Considering the form that Kohli is in, he has a good chance to extend his lead a bit further.
With the help of his 50-ball 94 in the opening T20I, Kohli surpassed Rohit to become the player with most 50+ scores in the format. Kohli made 23rd fifty-plus in T20 cricket, which is the most by any batsman.
“I didn’t want to put pressure on Rahul but I couldn’t get going properly,” Kohli recalled the tough spell when he couldn’t connect the ball well in the first balls. “I don’t have to change much (in my batting) across formats. I just concentrate on doing the job instead of hitting (the ball) in the air. I played according to the situation in the second half (of my innings).”
