IPL to play role in Gayle, Bravo’s T20 World Cup selection: Lara
The upcoming 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to play a “huge role” in deciding whether West Indies superstars Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo should participate in the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, believes Brian Lara.
With Gayle (40) and Bravo (36) both have been dealing with their age and injury issues over last few years now, Lara thinks a gruelling tournament like IPL could be a good indicator to show if the seasoned cricketers really have the ability to be selected for the global showpiece event of T20 format for the current world champions.
“I think the IPL is going to be a huge point or signal for who is actually going to carry on. It’s still going to be five months after the IPL for the World Cup. Fitness levels are very important, but a gruesome tournament like the IPL is going to tell the West Indies selectors who are the players that they really need going into the last four months of preparation for the World Cup,” said the 50-year-old.
Gayle has been out of T20Is since March 2019 despite taking part in the Bangladesh Premier League and the Mzansi Super League (MSL) recently. So it is going to be harder for him to prove himself and win a place back in the squad for T20 World Cup.
The situation is comparatively easier for Bravo, who returned to the West Indies T20I side recently after over three years and played against Ireland in January and then against Sri Lanka earlier this month.
