Denly was knocked out of the T20 series due to ankle injury. He will not be able to play in the first practice match of the Red Ball on Tuesday. He is expected to recover from injury and play in the second three-day practice match.

It had been a quiet summer for Jonny Bairstow. He was dropped from the squad for the Test against New Zealand due to a poor performance in the Ashes. His form was much poor in the recent Ashes series against Australia as he averaged just 23.77 in 10 innings with 3-single digit scores. He hit just one half-century in the whole series.

England Test squad:

Joe Root (c), Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Denly, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Sam Curran, Matthew Parkinson, Jack Leach, Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood, Dominic Sibley.
