Kohli to meet selectors to finalise squad for West Indies tour

In the latest development, Indian skipper Virat Kohli will mark his presence at the selection meeting along with the five key selectors as India squad for West Indies tour will be announced on Sunday (July 21).

The main issue that the selection panel is expected to face is former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future.

MS Dhoni’s future remains uncertain:

MS Dhoni even told earlier that he doesn’t know when he would retire from international cricket and now after India’s exit from ICC World Cup 2019 semi-finals, his future remains uncertain.

It is expected that Dhoni will not be selected for India’s tour of West Indies starting from August 3. It seems that the Indian selectors want to rest the player after a long international season as Dhoni was playing since IPL-12 season.

The 38-year-old veteran cricketer has been combating niggles in his back and injured his hand also during the World Cup campaign.

The other problem will be resting the experienced players in the team led by Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami including all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

All these significant players might be rested for the limited-overs set-up (three T20s and three ODIs). But on August 22, when Test series starts, Virat Kohli along with Jasprit Bumrah should be available.

“The selectors might consider resting some players for the limited-overs series because they have had no break in the last couple of months starting with IPL-12. But they will be aware of the fact that the World Test Championships begins will two Tests in the West Indies for India.

Every Test win is important especially away from home. So it’s possible they will send a full-strength squad for the Test series,” sources close to the selectors told CricketNext.

If suppose the top players are given the rest, then bright young prospects like Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed, Krunal Pandya, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill will get their chance to showcase their mettle. It should be noted that all of these players are part of the India ‘A’ squad (at present) touring the West Indies.

Opening batsmen Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw are still unavailable with injury concerns and both are nursing their injuries at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru now.

The T20Is are expected to kick-start from August 3 to 6, while the ODIs will start from August 8 to 14. The two-match Test series will be played from August 22 to September 3.
