Kolkata feels home to me: Shakib
Shakib Al Hasan made a short tour to his former IPL home, Kolkata, to attend a cultural program.
Shakib landed in Bangladesh last week and joined the practice camp ahead of Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020 where he will be representing Gemcon Khulna alongside Mahmudullah Riyad.
Shakib was called for a day long tour by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. He took the route to Kolkata via road through the Benapole-Petrapole land port on Thursday.
The world No.1 ODI all-rounder was greeted with love in Kolkata, the place which he marked as ‘home’ while speaking to the local media.
“It feels really great to be here. I used to be here every time for playing purpose but this is the first time I am here for such an event,” he said.
“I did not want to miss the chance (to come to Kolkata) when Paresh (Pal) da invited me because Kolkata feels like a home to me. I could not turn down Kolkata’s call. I am overwhelmed by the love and emotion from the people here.”
Shakib returned to Dhaka by an US Bangla Airlines flight on Friday.
Kolkata has been Shakib’s home ground for six Indian Premier League seasons (barring 2013). He was bought at the auction by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011 mega auction. He continued with the Knight Riders till 2017 before being released for 2018 auction, where Sunrisers Hyderabad roped him in.
Shakib was under one-year suspension by the ICC which ended on October 29, 2020. With the 14th edition of IPL expected to take place in April-May next year, Shakib might well be seen back in the tournament if any team bids for him at the player auction.
