Live: Bangladesh vs New Zealand, 1st ODI, McLean Park, Napier

New Zealand might have surrendered to India in ODIs but their resurgence in T20Is means that they would be looking forward to carrying on the same momentum as they invite Bangladesh for the upcoming ODI fixtures. Now, Bangladesh have been tasked with tough assignments ahead as they are searching for their maiden win in Kiwis’ soil.

Here is one interesting fact. The Tigers haven’t lost to Kiwis at home since 2010 while Kiwis never lost to Bangladesh at their den. However, Shakib-Al-Hasan’s absence could turn out to be a big blow for the Tigers. As far as their recent meeting is concerned. Bangladesh got the better of New Zealand at a neutral venue in Cardiff ODI in the year 2017.

Will be an exciting contest

For sure it will be an exciting contest ahead with both teams aiming to outwit each other. After losing 1-4 at home to India, they are under pressure to increase the points in the rankings charts while Bangladesh will be looking forward to cashing in on the chances to better effect in search of their first ever ODI win against New Zealand in New Zealand.

Against India, batters like Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Tom Latham chipped in with runs while bowlers Trent Boult and Matt Henry had a fair outing. Tim Southee has been out of form and he will have to sort out the woes before it is too late. Lockie Ferguson has been quite sensational in leading the pace attack so far and is one of the key factors.

On the contrary, Bangladesh top-order batsmen Tamim, Liton Das, Rahim and Sarkar are expected to bolster the batting attack and the middle order is well backed by Mahmuddlah. Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin will all have to step up and cause problems. In the absence of Shakib, there is a burden on the inexperienced spinners – Mehidy Hasan and Nayeem Hasan.

Mashrafe Mortaza to Martin Guptill. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot working, to mid on for 1 run, fielded by Das. New Zealand have completed a very calm runchase at McLean Park, winning by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead over Bangladesh in the three match ODI series. Martin Guptill was the star with the bat, playing in a very calm manner and never giving the tourists a sniff of getting back into the game as he compiled a 15th ODI century. He built big partnerships with Henry Nicholls (53) and Ross Taylor (45*) as the Black Caps cruised home with more than five overs to spare. Bangladesh were pretty flat in the field, consigned to defeat early in the chase due to Guptill's authoritative batting. It could have been much worse for the tourists, however, had Mohammad Mithun not been able to scrap his way to a half century the target would have been tiny in comparison. Trent Boult and Matt Henry set the tone with the new ball early this afternoon and the Kiwis never really let up from there. Plenty of work for the visitors to do to improve but it's a quick turnaround with the Second ODI taking place in Dunedin on Friday.

SIX! Mashrafe Mortaza to Martin Guptill. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. Guptill has had enough of patting the ball around, he wants to get this match finished. He winds up and unleashes a devastasting blow with some tasty wrist-work.
