Mahmudullah is a lot like VVS Laxman: Mashrafe
7-8 thousand runs could be next to the name. The statistics could have been more rich. But Mahmudullah has ignored his own achievement thinking about the team.
According to former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahmudullah Riyad has lost many runs of his career while playing for the team. No one else has made such a sacrifice for Bangladesh cricket.
Mahmudullah’s topic came up in Mashrafe’s conversation with Tamim Iqbal on Facebook Live on Monday night. The night before, Tamim had a live chat with Mahmudullah. There, Tamim said, although many people do not want to give the credit he deserves, the team is very proud of Mahmudullah and feels his importance.
Mashrafe has been a great support to Mahmudullah during the difficult times of his career as captain. Tamim specially thanked Mashrafe for that in the live chat. Mashrafe highlighted his assessment of Mahmudullah. He even compared Mahmudullah to former India batsman VVS Laxman.
“Mahmudullah is a lot like VVS Laxman. He doesn’t get runs, when it’s not needed. But when the team need runs, he’s the person who always comes forward.”
“He’s such a cricketer if he could have batted at number four or five, his statistics would have been better. But in the interest of the team, we make him bat at 6. We don’t have a batsman at the bottom who can play devastating innings at the end. He has lost many runs in his career while playing for the team. Riyad has been upset a lot of times. I understood that he accepted it with a smile.”
“Today, there could have been 7-8 thousand runs next to his name. But he had to play for the team. He has to work very hard. His work is such that it will not be successful all day. If he is not successful, he has to listen to criticism from the fans, media and everywhere. Even after that. He is a senior cricketer, yet one day he came but did not say that he wanted to bat in four. He has been accepting the most sacrifices for the Bangladesh team,” Mashrafe concluded.
