Mashrafe’s ODI captaincy future still undecided
According to the BCB boss, it was all made up by the media, with the decision about the leadership of the ODI side scheduled to be taken only after the board meeting in March.
“I did not say anything like that. You (the media) have said that in television, not me. The captain will be decided in the upcoming board meeting in March. I can not say before the meeting if he (Mashrafe) will play or not, will he remain as skipper or not will be. He will be the skipper in this series (against Zimbabwe),” Nazmul said.
This latest statement from the BCB boss could come as a surprise to many, as this is the same person who had said less than a week ago that Mashrafe can continue playing ODI cricket if fitness permits but the Zimbabwe series is going to be his last stint as skipper.
In explanation to this announcement, Papon had also insisted at that time that they can not ensure Mashrafe, already 36 years old, as a captain for long term.
“My thinking is Mashrafe will play the Zimbabwe series if he is fit but with the next World Cup in mind, we can’t just give the captaincy to someone at the last minute before that. We will be able to give a clear-cut decision on the matter in a few months,” the BCB president had said.
