Mayank Agarwal replaces injured Prithvi Shaw
Right-handed opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been called as the replacement for injured Prithvi Shaw as the youngster is ruled out for the remaining series.
Prithvi Shaw suffered an ankle injury while attempting to take a catch during India’s practice game against Cricket Australia XI. As an immediate effect, the right-hander was ruled out for the Adelaide Test.
As he continued to recover, the opening batsman was unavailable for the selection for Perth Test too. According to some reports from head coach Ravi Shastri, Prithvi Shaw was expected to be available for the Boxing day Test in Melbourne.
But now Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the young opener won’t be available for the remainder of the Test series against Australia. Another right-handed opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been called as the replacement for Prithvi Shaw.
In his first two Test innings brought Prithvi Shaw 204 runs, including a 99-ball century on debut. India’s opening pair, KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, have struggled in his absence, with neither having hit a half-century in their combined eight innings in the first Two Tests.
Shaw’s replacement, Agarwal, is yet to make his Test debut but is experienced at the domestic level. He averages 50.30 in first-class cricket, with a high score of 304 not out. He also struck a half-century in his most recent first-class innings, for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy.
Apart from this blow, India are boosted with another good news as Hardik Pandya will also join the team in Australia. Having played in the first three days of the game, he was absent on the fourth and final day of the domestic clash.
Kedar Devdhar, Baroda skipper, confirmed in the post match press conference that Pandya won’t be available for Baroda in the next match as he would be flying to Australia. “He’s not available for our next game, as he’s going to Australia,” Devdhar said on Monday.
