Mayers, Bonner win CWI contracts
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced 18 men for the 2021-22 central contracts.
Ex-Test captain Jason Holder is the only man with an all-format contract.
Among the newcomers, Joshua Da Silva, Nkrumah Bonner, Kyle Mayers (Test contract) and Akeal Hosein (white-ball contract) have earned contracts. All four had a breakthrough Bangladesh tour earlier this year.
Mayers’ case was a historical one, as he scored a debut double hundred to pull-off all-time fifth-highest Test chase in Chattogram. Bonner recently scored his first Test hundred in Sri Lanka series, while Joshua Da Silva has cemented his spot as the wicket-keeper batter. Hosein showed glimpses of hopes in maroon colours.
The number of contracted players in the past season was 22. Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell and Shimron Hetmyer are among the ones left out.
“Contracts offered for the 2021-22 period see 18 players being retained, a decrease of four from last year. Jason Holder is the only player to retain his all-format contract due to his strong Test and T20I performances during the evaluation period,” CWI selector Roger Harper said.
“There are several new players offered red ball contracts earned by their strong performances during the last period. A number of players were not retained because they did not meet the minimum requirements.”
West Indies’ next assignments include home series against South Africa and Australia.
