Not Miraz, Papon wanted Mashrafe to open against India
Bangladesh played a huge risky gamble by sending Mehedi Hasan Miraz to open Bangladesh innings alongside Liton Das in the all important final match of the Asia Cup 2018 in the UAE.
Initially Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was said to be responsible for the move, as he had given some hint on it the day before the match, and was also credited big way after the trick getting success.
However, now it looks like it was not the Narail Express, rather the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Nazmul Hasan Papon, who stiched together the plan to bring up a surprise element in Bangladesh’s opening.
But when Bangladesh finally came to bat in the final against India, it was not just the spectators or the opposition side who was surprised, but was equally surprised the BCB boss as well. Because though he had planted the plan, his desire was to see Mashrafe open Bangladesh’s innings. But Mashrafe went an extra mile, and sent Miraz to bat instead.
While talking to the media on Tuesday, Papon said: “To send Miraz open the bat was a bizarre decision. It caught me off guard. Because the day before, I had told Mashrafe to take the role.”
So it’s certain that on this issue, Mashrafe did not take Papon’s words as final. He did his own calculations, and came up with the result on the eve of the match. During the dinner session of the team, he gave Miraz the proposal, and convinced him to open Bangladesh innings.
