South African captain AB de Villiers smashed a stunning innings of 162 off just 66 balls which featured 17 fours and eight sixes in total. He notched his century in 52 balls and scored next 50 runs within 11 balls to own the fastest ODI one-fifty. His 52-ball ton was also the second fastest century in World Cup, just behind Irish big-hitter Kevin O’Brien.

De Villiers was merciless against Jason Holder smashing four sixes and a four in the final over for 30 runs.

With the help of the Villiers-storm, South Africa registered 408 for 5 which was the second-highest ever total registered by a team in a World Cup, and also the highest score by any team on Australian soil.

“A very enjoyable knock today, I thought the foundations the boys did up front allowed us to free up later on,” de Villiers said at the conclusion of the first innings.

“It was one of those knocks that I love. Everything bounced my way, a little bit of luck today and I made it count.”

De Villiers now has the fastest fifty, hundred and one-fifty in ODI cricket – all coming against West Indies – and the fastest double cannot be too far away!
