On This Day: Mashrafe 6/26 vs Kenya, 2006
Only Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Rafique had five-wicket hauls in ODIs among Bangladeshis before Mashrafe’s six-for at that time.
Bangladesh sent in Kenya to bat first. Mashrafe was introduced after the first ten overs. He picked up Malhar Patel’s wicket and then dismissed Kenyan skipper Steve Tikolo. He further sent back Tanmay Mishra, Collins Obuya, Brijal Patel, Thomas Odoyo.
Kenya were bowled out for 118 runs. Bangladesh reached their target in 27 overs to finish series with 3-0 clean sweep. Mashrafe was adjudged Man of the Match in all the matches and so the Man of the Series.
Mashrafe became the first bowler from Bangladesh to take a six-for in ODIs. In 2013, Rubel Hossain also bagged 6/26 against New Zealand in Dhaka. Rubel bowled 5.5 overs for his career-best spell while Mashrafe bowled all the ten overs. Mustafizur Rahman took 6 for 43 against India in his just second ODI in 2015.
Mashrafe then never went on to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI. He has taken four wickets in a match seven times, six of those were after his magical spell against Kenya.
