Pakistan skipper likely to be suspended, Shoaib Malik to replace him

Pakistani captain Sarfraz Ahmed has landed in an infamous controversy midway through the ODI assignment against South Africa. During South Africa’s tense chase, Sarfraz passed on racist remarks (in Urdu) to all-rounder Phehlukwayo, which were caught clearly on the stump mics.

However, after the match, Sarfraz Ahmed did realise that he had made a huge mistake by making those comments. However, he took to his official Twitter handle to extend an apology. He further added that his comments were not intended to harm any such player, and also, he confessed that he passed on such remarks in the tense situation of the game and he really did not mean to hurt him by any means.

If reports are to be believed in, Sarfraz Ahmed could well be given a suspension of 3 to 5 matches. The ICC rule comes into play here. If deemed to be breaching the code of conduct, the suspension could be on its way to the Pakistani skipper.

What is Anti-Racism code?

According to the Article 2.13 of its ‘Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel’ — published and implied as of September 30, 2018 — covers obscene, abusing or offensive language and that “such conduct is prohibited under the ICC’s Anti-Racism Code and must be dealt with according to the procedures set out therein”.

The ICC’s ‘Anti-Racism Code for Participants’ describes the offence as “engaging in any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise), which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any reasonable person in the position of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, Umpire Support Personnel or any other person (including a spectator) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin”.

If Sarfraz Ahmed is proved guilty of having violated this code, the team would need an interim captain. According to the reports, the veteran Shoaib Malik is most likely to be named as the replacement captain of the team.
