In accordance with the description given by former captain Akram Khan, Habibul Bashar Shumon and Khaled Mahmud Sujon, bowlers from neighboring Pakistan who visited in large numbers to play in domestic cricket of Bangladesh brought ‘tampering’ down on this country once upon a time.
During the Independence Day Exhibition match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, former captain and now team manager Khaled Mahmud Sujon said, “A large number of Pakistani cricketers used to come to play in Dhaka league.”
“If you turn the page of match histories in Dhaka league, you would come to see a bowler after conceding 40 runs in first 5 overs, picked up 5 wickets in next five overs. Whenever Pakistani bowlers came, it happened due to reverse swing,” Khaled Mahmud said.
Mahmud even assumed of tampering in Bangladesh Premier League; he said, “It cannot be said that nothing is happening in BPL. Perhaps we could not detect. Those who commit these sort of misdeeds, do it in mischievous ways – these are not legal.”
“It became a part of cricket as many legendary cricketers also did this,” Khaled Mahmud said.
Watching things from a different perspective, another former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar refused to make a deal with ‘ball tampering’ opposing many a one who advocated for its legality.
Therefore, Habibul Bashar said, “I never support the deviation of a normal cricket ball by tampering – whether it is done by rubbing with hard papers or pricking.”
Though one of the most successful captains of Bangladesh cricket said he once witnessed to shine the ball using Vaseline.
“Tampering is a kind of artistic violation of laws. But I’m sure our cricketers did never do that,” he said.
Bangladesh ICC trophy winning captain Akram Khan also voiced alongside Habibul Bashar saying, “Our cricketers do not have the mentality of winning a match with wrong doings. I hope it will never happen here. Even domestic cricket in our country are also free from these troubles.”
