Rahul, Gayle guide Punjab back to winning ways
Punjab Kings have picked up a huge 9-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians in the Match 17 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Batting first, Mumbai gathered a below-par total of 131 for six in their allotted 20 overs. While this is their lowest total so far in this season, they could not click with the bat in the previous games as well, with 159 being their highest so far.
Captain Rohit Sharma was their top-scorer in this match, making a 52-ball 63 with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes. He remained at the crease till the 18th over.
But except for Rohit, only Suryakumar Yadav among the top-order batsmen could step up with a good show, scoring 33 off 27 balls with 3 fours and a lone sixer. Towards the end, Kieron Pollard was unbeaten on 16 off 12 balls.
For Punjab, Mohammad Shami and Ravi Bishnoy, both finished with two for 21 in their quota of four overs. Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh shared the other two wickets.
In reply, Punjab lost the wicket of Mayank Agarwal (25 off 20 balls) in the 8th over of their innings, but KL Rahul and Chris Gayle stayed till the end to guide their side to winning ways, after having lost their last three fixtures.
While Rahul scored 60 off 52 balls with 3 fours and as many sixes, Gayle made 43 off 35 balls with 5 fours and a couple of sixes.
Rahul Chahar took the only wicket for Mumbai and finished with one for 19 at an economy rate of 4.75.
After this match, Mumbai are fourth in the points table, winning two and losing three matches so far. Punjab are fifth, having the same number of wins and losses but an inferior net run-rate.
