Rohit ends 2019 with a new world record
India limited-overs captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma has had a remarkable year without any doubt. During the third ODI between India and West Indies, Rohit Sharma broke Sanath Jayasuriya’s 22-year-old record of most international runs as an opening batsman in a calendar year. This goes to show how Rohit has played a huge part in India’s success this year.
Coming to the point, ahead of the third ODI against West Indies, Rohit Sharma was only nine runs short of the former Sri Lankan opener Jayasuriya who scored 2387 runs in 1997. During India’s run chase of 316, Rohit Sharma got off to a sublime start as he scored a run-a-ball 63 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
Rohit aggregated a staggering score of 2442 runs in 2019 and ended up as the second leading run-scorer in ODIs behind Virat Kohli. The 32-year-old opener has smashed ten centuries and ten half-centuries across formats this year, averaging 53.08 in 47 innings. Rohit was also adjudged the ‘Man of the Series’ after Virat Kohli and Co aced the 316-run target to win the three-match ODI series by 2-1.
Rohit Sharma scored 36 in Chennai ODI and then he followed it up with a daddy hundred, scoring 159. In the final ODI, he scored 63 runs and his aggregate score is 258 runs. “Extremely grateful for the year I’ve had. A World Cup victory would have been nice, but as a team, throughout the year, whether red ball or white-ball cricket, the team came together really well. Personally, I’ve enjoyed batting, but there’s no way I’m stopping.
“There’s an exciting year coming up. I understand my batting really well. I want to play within my limits; knowing the game plan you want to execute is very important.
“Even in the red-ball format against South Africa, it was going to be challenging. Once we start travelling, we want to win games and stay on top of the table,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
